      M eetirigala Nissarana Vanaya, is one of Sri Lanka's most respected meditation monasteries, established under the strict forest tradition.  Founded by Asoka Weeraratna (the founder of the German Dharmaduta Society and the Berlin Buddhist Vihara in Germany) in 1968, it was led under the guidance of Most Venerable Matara Sri Nanarama Mahathera (author of Seven stages of Purifications and 'Seven Contemplations, published by the BPS).  Asoka Weeraratna equipped the  monastery with all the facilities conducive to the meditative life and later, he himself entered the Buddhist order under the name Meetirigala Dhammanisanthi Thero.

 The  current incumbent Chief Preceptor, Most Venerable Uda Eriyagama Dhammajiva Maha Thero is an accomplished meditation master with experience in both Samatha and Vipassana meditation methods.  Venerable Dhammajîva Maha Thero is fluent in Sinhala, English and Burmese and has translated many meditation guide books from Burmese to English and to Sinhala.  He is also the author of numerous books, both in English and Sinhala languages.    


Venerable Dhammajiva Maha Thero teaches at centres in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Singapore, Burma, United States, Germany and Canada in both the English and Sinhalese medium. Venerable Dhammajiva's teachings are available on-line under Dhamma Dana. Under his guidance, a residential meditation centre with modern amenities has been constructed, adjacent to the monastery with facilities for 50 yogis to practice Samatha and Vipassanâ meditation in accordance with the Theravada tradition.
